With Stichting Dock and Boogieland Foundation [Kick] Boxing Club, and also Plot Twist Placemaking, Placemaking Europe is excited to welcome you with the Amsterdam Noord community to a Buurtfeest to take back public space for human-scale movement , fun and games.

Together will host special technique seminars, street games – like badminton and kids’ obstacle course – as well as inclusive fitness circuits. Boogieland will have free [kick]box training!

Of course, no neighbourhood event is complete without food and music. We will serve hot cocoa and warm bites with some great tunes and cosy lights.

See you there!

What is Park(ing) Day for Fitness?

Park(ing) Day for Fitness builds on the original Park(ing) Day concept – taking over a parking spot for your own human-scale and community use – now with physical activity, movement, or fitness in mind.

What is Park(ing) Day?

Park(ing) Day takes back the public space for community interaction, motivated by cities continued prevalence for private vehicles:  “more than 70% of most cities’ outdoor space is dedicated to the private vehicle while only a fraction of that land is allocated to open space for people” (Rebar, p. 2). Park(ing) Day therefore offers a short-term solution for reclaiming and re-imagining public space, as a metered parking spot is an inexpensive short-term lease for a 10’x20’ plot of land.It is now a global initiative, invented by Rebar Studio in San Francisco, held worldwide every 3rd Friday in September, where parking spots are transformed into temporary public places – be it parks, social areas, exhibit areas, or anything the organisers want to promote.

What is the mission of Park(ing) Day for Fitness?

The mission of the Park(ing) Day for Fitness events is to draw attention to the many (untapped) possibilities that our cities offer for physical activity, the need for more open spaces where people can exercise safely, and further, to provoke a public debate on how to adapt in times of crisis and improve the quality of the urban environment. This re-thinking and transformation is, after almost two years with COVID19 restrictions, more urgent than ever.

Showing how low-cost, high-gain public space interventions can be a solution for providing opportunities for more physical activity in dense cities, as well as building the capacity of participating partners and their local network.

Would you like to learn about placemaking first-hand?

We welcome volunteers to learn and have fun with us during our event in Amsterdam Noord! Volunteering at our event only requires a few hours on Sunday 20th November 2022 and is a great way to meet the community, learn about how to run an event, and of course you also get to experience the placemaking first-hand! We offer a voucher and certificate as well.
