Johan Verlinde, Program manager Rotterdam Climate Adaptation Plan

"It’s about public space, the built environment, but also about changing behaviors. It’s not just about the hard infrastructure but also the softer, social aspects. I also strive to learn as much as possible from other cities and countries around the world, which is why international collaboration is such an important part of my work."
Johan Verlinde

As a delta city, Rotterdam has long focused on preparing for extreme weather events. In a conversation during Placemaking Week Europe, Johan Verlinde, head of the Rotterdam Climate Adaptation Program, explained how the city is advancing its strategy with measures like greening public spaces, streets, facades, and rooftops. Lea, our Community and Communications Lead spoke with Verlinde about how Rotterdam views climate change not just as a threat but as an opportunity to create a more livable city.
