Building just resilience through inclusive climate adaptation

FairFuture brings people and places together to shape a fair response to the climate crisis. It champions equity, inclusion, and collaboration, ensuring that climate adaptation grows from the lived realities of vulnerable and marginalised communities. By working with local and regional governments (LRGs), the project builds pathways for transformation that are both just and resilient.

What the project entails

  • Resilience Action Labs (ReALs) — creative spaces for dialogue, decision-making, and collective planning.
  • Tools and Frameworks — such as the Just Resilience and Climate Adaptation Handbook and governance models designed for fair and inclusive action.
  • Pilot Projects — implemented across diverse regions to test, refine, and scale solutions tailored to local needs.

The Impact

From policies to public spaces, FairFuture aims to turn fairness into practice:

  • Developing guidelines and frameworks that make climate adaptation equitable and effective.
  • Delivering training and policy tools for LRGs to embed just resilience into their strategies.
  • Empowering communities to strengthen their adaptive capacity and influence local governance.
  • Sharing replicable models across Europe to inspire wider change.

Monitoring and Collaboration

The project follows a multi-level monitoring framework aligned with EU and global standards. Through partnerships with platforms like MIP4Adapt, FairFuture connects local insights to international networks, accelerating the shift toward more just and inclusive adaptation practices.

Placemaking Europe’s Role

At Placemaking Europe, a place-based lens is applied to FairFuture, making climate action tangible, local, and rooted in how people live, feel, and come together.

  • Implementing Placemaking Approaches:
Placemaking methods integrate climate adaptation into both physical and social spaces, transforming them into functional, resilient, and community-driven environments.
  • Organising Participatory Workshops:
Lively formats such as Fish-Bowl dialogues and Circle Way sessions engage communities, experts, and local governments in co-creating adaptation strategies tailored to local contexts.
  • Dissemination and Engagement:
Events, co-creation sessions, and resilience pathway workshops enhance stakeholder engagement, spark conversations, and build collaboration.
  • Developing Tools and Guidelines:
Guidelines and practical resources support communities and local leaders in implementing equitable and inclusive adaptation measures.
