From 2-4 December 2024, Helsingborg hosted the final milestone of the Cities in Placemaking programme: Making Placemaking Systemic. This milestone marked the culmination of a two-year journey dedicated to embedding placemaking as a city-wide strategy. Participants worked collaboratively to finalise the Global Agenda for Making Placemaking Systemic and develop local action plans tailored to their unique urban contexts.
Beyond refining strategies, the workshop provided an opportunity for cities to reflect on their progress, assessing how placemaking had been integrated into municipal structures and policies over the course of the programme. The key outcomes has been:
Finalising the Global Agenda
Participants reviewed and refined the Global Agenda, ensuring that it effectively addressed feedback from previous milestones. The final version was agreed upon, setting the foundation for long-term commitments from participating cities.
Developing Local Action Agendas
Cities worked to translate the global commitments into concrete, actionable steps tailored to their local realities. Each municipality outlined strategies for embedding placemaking into governance frameworks, securing funding, and fostering cross-sector collaboration.
Showcasing the Placemaking Journey
Municipalities presented their experiences of integrating placemaking into their city structures over the past two years. These reflections highlighted key transformations, challenges, and successes, providing valuable insights for the next phase of implementation.
Looking Ahead
With the Agenda for Making Placemaking Systemic finalised and local action plans in drafts, this milestone solidified the commitment to making placemaking a systemic and lasting approach to urban development. The insights gathered will guide cities as they move into the implementation phase, ensuring that placemaking remains a transformative force in shaping more inclusive, resilient, and human-centred cities.
