Creating better cities together

THE FESTIVAL

Placemaking Week Europe 2019 is Europe’s biggest conference and festival celebrating the impact of placemaking on the urban fabric. Approximately 400 placemakers, a diverse mixture of professionals working on creating a better public space and city at eye level, met in Valencia from June 12th-15th 2019. A variety of placemakers, politicians, civil servants, developers, big and small companies shared best practices, create new knowledge in interactive workshops, accelerate existing and new projects and celebrate the growing contribution of placemaking in creating better cities.

HOST CITY

In 2019, the Municipality of Valencia advanced a strong placemaking agenda focused on reclaiming public space, promoting pedestrian-friendly environments, and activating the waterfront. The city consolidated work on the Plan Especial de la Marina, opened public exhibitions to involve residents in shaping the waterfront’s future, and coordinated closely with the Port Authority to secure more civic and cultural uses of La Marina. These efforts reinforced the city’s commitment to participatory regeneration, cultural activation, and transforming key public spaces into inclusive, people-centered areas.

Creative Bureaucracy

Creative Bureaucracy finds ways to YES, YES, & YES. Moreover, it is organisational change in a mindset, not just one bureaucrat being brave alone. A future direction could lead towards exploring topics such as temporary municipalities.

Open-source Sharing from Placemaking Practice

Open-source Sharing from Placemaking Practice is necessary because we are all richer when we share. This process encourages democracy; for example, an open-source tool proposal to change public space includes using Google street view, sketching submissions to alter the streetlevel, and open voting for change.

ABOUT THE CITY

Since 2016, Valencia has steadily expanded its network of green zones and pedestrian-friendly corridors as part of a broader shift toward a more sustainable, people-centered city. The city has invested in revitalising parks, enhancing the continuity of green infrastructure, and strengthening emblematic spaces such as the Turia Gardens as ecological and social backbones. Initiatives to calm traffic, add shaded civic areas, and redesign key streets have helped link neighbourhoods with greener, healthier public spaces, supporting biodiversity while improving environmental resilience.

These efforts have gone hand in hand with policies aimed at boosting walkability and overall quality of life. Valencia has progressively reduced car dominance, broadened sidewalks, introduced pedestrian-priority zones, and expanded cycling routes to encourage active mobility. Neighbourhood-level upgrades, new plazas, and improved public amenities have helped make daily life more accessible, sociable, and comfortable for residents.
