Over the last year, PlaceCity has been very active in collecting and testing placemaking tools in two different local contexts - Vienna and Oslo - and sharing them with placemakers all over Europe and beyond. At the mid-term of the PlaceCity project, we shared our own experiences and open the discussion about placemaking and its potential as a tool for urban regeneration with other cities. The experiences that cities all over the world, facing Covid-19, have made in the last months give us the opportunity to explore placemaking with new eyes!
From June 30th to July 2nd, we organized an online symposium "Placemaking as a Tool for Urban Regeneration".
After reflecting on how different cities, including Vienna, Oslo, Madrid, Barcelona and Buenos Aires, responded to Covid-19, we explored the possibilities and limitations we need to address through the experiences of different local contexts, to achieve a shift stand in collaboration and placemaking. Together with international placemakers, planners, civil servants, city administrations, among others, we showcased and contextualized local placemaking projects, including PlaceCity Oslo and Vienna.
On June 2nd, we organized an exploratory walk through Leopoldstadt, Vienna in order to learn about the COVID-19 measures undertaken by the city of Vienna. During the walk we explored other projects in public space as well.
