Park(ing) Day is a global movement to temporarily repurpose parking spaces into community spaces. We also believe that cities should encourage their users to be physically active. Our aim is to combine these two visions.
The mission of the Park(ing) Day for Fitness events is to draw attention to the many (untapped) possibilities that our cities offer for physical activity, the need for more open spaces where people can exercise safely, and how to improve the quality of the urban environment. The project is co-funded by the European Union.
Start by choosing a location and come up with an idea you feel enthusiastic about! Activation can range from light interventions such as DIY street games drawn in chalk, to more complex ones like building your own ping-pong tables and organising a tournament. It's fun to do this with others, so find your allies. Think about equipment you will need. Chalk? Badminton rackets? Wooden bales and a drill? Make a plan! And don't forget to think about who to invite and how to promote your intervention. Finally, you can activate your parking spot and have fun!
Activations take place all over the world, but this open call is for interventions in the Netherlands. The Parking Day For Fitness activations will take place on September 16th and 17th, 2022. You are also welcome to attend our Live Launch event in August. This will be a great opportunity to connect and share knowledge!
If you reside or work in the Netherlands, you can submit your idea using this form. First come first served. Selected ideas will receive financial grant of 200-600€ and our team’s guidance.
The Live Launch of the Open Call will take place on Thursday, August 25, 2022 from 6 till 7:30 p.m. in Amsterdam Noord. At the event, we will share more about the initiative and how you can get involved. Plus, we will have music, food, drinks, and even take a step in front of A-Lab together to enjoy the sun and show some intervention tactics first hand. We will start in A Lab at our Office Unit #210 (2nd floor; right side corridor) before moving outside. It's open for all, free-lancers, organisations, students, companies, etc.
