In a few words...
mobilise your local community to engage creatively with possible uses of public spaces!
mobilise your local community to engage creatively with possible uses of public spaces!
The „Open Call“ is a tool for the joint appropriation and design of public space that mobilises the local community to engage creatively with possible uses of public spaces and actually implement their ideas together.
Background
This tool was developed in the framework of the PlaceCity Vienna project which aims to activate and strengthen the central area of Floridsdorf, a peripheral district in Vienna, through placemaking interventions and, thus, to show the local potentials of public space within this area. Ba- sed on a profound research and analysis phase, as well as co-creation workshops with the local community, public squares, streets and vacant plinths have been defined that have a particularly high potential to be activated by the local community and, on the longer term, to con- tribute to the strengthening of the centre. In order to demonstrate different possibilities of how to use these (semi-)public spaces, an Open Call was organised to support local actors who want to implement their own ideas on these “enabling spots”.
Main Goals and Purpose
The temporary activation of public spaces (“enabling spots”) in the frame of an Open Call aims to show its potential uses and to encourage the local community to make them their own. By getting the chance to test and experiment different uses in public space without taking any risk, the neighbourhood is invited to shape their immediate living environment. On the long- term, the community-led activities (including events and construction projects) that have been initiated by the Open Call can contribute to strengthening the neighbourhood. Moreover, through the active engagement with public space, awareness of one‘s own living environment is intensified.
