Creating long-term value in affordable housing: Examples from Milan 

At Fondazione Housing Sociale (FHS), they work closely with social housing providers and ethical real estate funds developing social housing projects all over Italy, with the aim of not only providing affordable homes but also creating thriving neighbourhoods with a strong sense of place and stimulating connections among inhabitants. 

During the session, Valentina Zaro and Francesca Spigarolo will give a brief overview of the Italian social housing field and then build on our experience in different social housing projects in Milano to underline the important role that placemaking can play in increasing the long-term value of affordable housing districts. By referring to different examples, they will show how placemaking is central in activating residential communities, supporting local commerce and services and positioning peripheral districts in the broader cultural landscape.

FHS I Fondazione Housing Sociale (FHS) is a non-profit foundation set up in 2004 with the main mission of experimenting innovative solutions to structure, finance, realize and manage social and collaborative housing interventions in Italy.

Francesca Spigarolo | With a background in political science and urban studies, at FHS she oversees international partnerships and works on placemaking, community engagement and participatory processes in large-scale regeneration projects
