The recent and ongoing outbreak of a global pandemic has highlighted the preciousness of public space and showed us how quickly it can become a scarce resource. The pandemic has also aggravated some of the challenges that we need to tackle, such as inclusiveness, sustainability, precarious employment conditions, financial stability, and others. Cultural squares are unique spaces that often are at the heart of the cities. They fulfill an important role in bringing different stakeholders together, contribute to the livability in cities (culture and fun) and bring forward social and economical matters, like diversity, gentrification, and climate adaptation. Nevertheless, the pandemic hit those squares quite hard as well and on an organizational level, many of them had to address the challenges of financial stability, employment and adjust their programming to the new realities.
At this very decisive moment, the cultural working group of Placemaking Europe is organizing a webinar with five different cultural squares from around the world with an overarching goal of initiating a network of cultural squares. In this webinar representatives of cultural squares with existing financial and organizational structures, with active cultural programming can come together to share their best practices, challenges, and tools as the first step toward building up the network.
Nazaket Azimli from STIPO took an initiative to come up with 10 Highlights for the Schouwburgplein, Rotterdam and this could be a good format for us to follow in the process of the webinar. As a result, we would have the highlights from other participating squares and can envision the forms of future collaboration.
We define the squares and public spaces that have cultural programming and an organizational structure as a potential participant of the initiative. Therefore, if you think the square you are working with would be interested to become part of it would be great if you fill this survey by July 5. This will help us to understand the vision and mission for your organization in joining this initiative and what are your preferences for this particular webinar and further development of the initiative.
