SUMMARY:Utopian Hours
DESCRIPTION:The Rotterdam edition marks a significant milestone for Stratosferica\, the Turin-based social enterprise behind the festival. It’s the first major European edition of the festival\, following the American debut of Utopian Hours in Miami in 2023. \n\n\n\nThe choice of Rotterdam reflects a long-standing dialogue between the festival and the city. Known internationally for its experimental architecture and forward-looking approach to climate and urban innovation\, Rotterdam offers a natural setting for Utopian Hours’ multidisciplinary and inspirational format. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUtopian Hours celebrates Ten Years in Rotterdam\n\n\n\nFestival founders Luca Ballarini and Giacomo Biraghi comment: \n\n\n\n\n“Utopian Hours has always celebrated cities and urban innovation through an accessible and open-minded approach. Rotterdam’s experimental spirit makes it the ideal place to expand the festival and engage a broader international audience.” \n\n\n\n\nThe Rotterdam edition is organised with the support of the City of Rotterdam\, Rotterdam Partners\, Droom en Daad\, and a network of cultural organisations across the city. The partnership with the City of Rotterdam builds on a roundtable on urban climate resilience held during Utopian Hours 2025\, which helped lay the groundwork for bringing the festival to the Netherlands. Over the years\, many Dutch voices have already taken to the festival stage\, including Winy Maas (MVRDV)\, Kristian Koreman (ZUS)\, Caroline Bos (UNStudio) and Dirk van Peijpe (De Urbanisten). \n\n\n\nMelany van Twuijver\, Strategic Advisor for Architectural Policy at the City of Rotterdam\, adds: \n\n\n\n\n“Turin and Rotterdam share much as forward- thinking cities working on urban renewal in a practical and systemic way. Rotterdam is proud to host Utopian Hours in May 2026 — a collaboration that brings international inspiration and new partnerships to the city\, serving as a catalyst for projects that move not only Rotterdam\, but all participants\, forward.” \n\n\n\n\nFor the Ten Years Edition\, the festival brings together some of the most influential voices in international city-making\, figures who have inspired audiences at previous editions and continue to shape the future of urban culture and design. Confirmed keynote speakers include Liam Young\, Matt Grunbaum (Field Operations)\, Baharash Bagherian (URB) and Sarah Castle (IF_DO)\, and Robert Stephens (Urbs Indis) who will present projects and perspectives shaping the future of urban culture and design. \n\n\n\nUtopian Hours will be hosted in the iconic Modernist landmark Groot Handelsgebouw (GHG) opposite Rotterdam Centraal Station. Over two days the programme will include keynote lectures\, curated roundtables\, panels\, city tours\, film and documentary screenings alongside The Urbanites’ Fair\, dedicated to independent editorial projects and third- sector organisations exploring contemporary placemaking. \n\n\n\nThe themed roundtables\, co-curated by Stratosferica and the City of Rotterdam\, will explore key challenges shaping the future of cities\, including: \n\n\n\n\nGreen Water City\n\n\n\nGender-Inclusive Public Space\n\n\n\nCarbon City\n\n\n\nThird Spaces\n\n\n\nJust Green\n\n\n\n\nThe full programme\, including masterclasses\, and additional speakers\, will be announced in the coming weeks. \n\n\n\nThe festival will also renew its collaboration with Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) and Rotterdam Rooftop Days\, and host an Exclusive Opening Reception at the spectacular Fenix Museum.

Once an industrial\, closed-off waterfront area\, it is now becoming an open\, inclusive\, and thriving urban district with ambitious plans for expansion. \n\n\n\nLearn how a wide range of stakeholders — from kindergartners to seniors — have been actively involved in co-creating a place that honours its industrial heritage while embracing sustainability\, community life\, and social resilience. \n\n\n\nWe’re thrilled to welcome Sara Schlyter\, Landscape Architect at the City of Helsingborg\, as our special guest. Sara plays a key role in the development of Oceanhamnen and will share unique insights into the challenges and successes of this place-led process. \n\n\n\nThe event will be co-hosted by Clémentine Robert and Laura Pellegrinelli\, members of Placemaking Europe’s Place-Led Development Working Group. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a placemaking practitioner\, urban planner\, community leader\, or simply passionate about people-centered cities — this session will leave you feeling inspired by the potential of waterfront development. \n\n\n\nLet’s explore how the past can meet the future in meaningful\, place-led ways. \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker: \n\n\n\nSara Schlyter is a landscape architect at the City of Helsingborg in Sweden. She is leading the development and design of public spaces in the new urban district of Oceanhamnen — a waterfront area offering a wide range of experiences\, many of which have been created through co-creation processes. One notable example is Dockan Park with the Jungle Playground\, which was awarded Landmärket 2022 for best Swedish landscape architecture of the year.

SUMMARY:Placemaking Week Europe 2024 - Rotterdam
DESCRIPTION:Placemaking Week Europe is the largest placemaking festival in Europe\n\n\n\nEvery year at Placemaking Week Europe\, placemakers from around the world come together each year in a new host city to present expertise and ideas\, share projects\, discuss placemaking strategies and methodology\, and work together with city municipalities to launch new placemaking initiatives in-situ. It is the most embedded urban festival in Europe with the distinct mission of creating better cities\, together. \n\n\n\nPlacemaking is the approach of building communities around a place\, and places by communities. People are invited to reimagine and reinvent public spaces collectively. Placemaking connects economic and social well-being\, as well as\, quality of life strategically. Builds on the human need for prosperity\, sociability and security. The movement builds on more than 50 years of experience in more than 50 countries. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRotterdam Skyline by Pascal Striebel\n\n\n\nThe festival’s co-host city for 2024 is Rotterdam\, Netherlands!\n\n\n\nRotterdam is known for its harbor\, lively cultural life\, modern architecture and… placemaking. Rotterdam also has a varied architectural landscape\, including skyscrapers designed by architects such as Rem Koolhaas\, Piet Blom and Ben van Berkel. Everyone has played their part in creating the current vibrant city. \n\n\n\nRotterdam is in a constant flux\, with a changing harbor\, ongoing urban transformations\, a growing emphasis on individual expression\, and residents with evolving needs. There is also a growing call for a more balanced relationship with water\, nature\, and addressing climate change.
